Israel Security Cabinet Discuss Amid US-Iran Tensions

(MENAFN) Israel's security cabinet met on Sunday to assess the possibility of a United States strike on Iran and the risk of broader regional escalation, according to reports.

Officials were scheduled to receive detailed briefings on Iran and multiple potential fronts, following assessments that the US could take military action in the near term. Prior to the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a smaller session with select advisers and security officials to consider how Hezbollah might react if a strike occurs.

Reports indicate that Israeli officials are divided on whether Hezbollah would engage directly with Israel in response to a US attack. A prevailing view in Israel is that Iran may attempt to buy time by offering additional proposals regarding its nuclear program, though chances of reaching an agreement remain limited due to significant disagreements with Washington.

Following his meeting earlier this month in Washington with US President Donald Trump, Netanyahu reportedly expressed uncertainty about the US position on Iran. “Is he still with us? I’m worried,” he allegedly asked an American official after the discussion.

Meanwhile, indirect nuclear talks between the US and Iran, mediated by Oman, are scheduled for a third round on Feb. 26 in Geneva.
