UN Chief Expresses Concern Over Regional Fallout of Mideast Tensions

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke by phone on Tuesday with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, expressing serious concern about the wider regional consequences of ongoing hostilities, according to reports.

During the conversation, the two officials "discussed the current military escalation in the region," and Guterres "reiterated his position," urging all parties to "fully respect international law and international humanitarian law, as well as to refrain from any attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure."

"He also expressed deep concern at the regional spill-over and the impact of the ongoing conflict on the global economy," the reports noted.

The discussions come amid Iran’s response to strikes by US and Israeli forces, which has involved launching missiles and drones toward Israel and Gulf nations. These developments have caused disruptions in global markets, affected air travel, and triggered sharp increases in oil prices.
