Switzerland Temporarily Shuts Tehran Embassy Amid Rising Tensions

(MENAFN) Switzerland has “temporarily closed” its embassy in Tehran and evacuated its remaining diplomatic personnel, citing rising security threats amid the escalating Middle East conflict, according to government statements on Wednesday.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed that Ambassador Olivier Bangerter and five other Swiss staff members departed Iran by land and are “now safely outside Iran.”

"Due to the attacks by the US and Israel against Iran and Iran's attacks on various countries in the Middle East, the security of staff at the Swiss embassy in Tehran can no longer be guaranteed," the statement said.

Earlier, four Swiss employees had left the country on March 3, while the remaining six, including the ambassador, departed on Wednesday. “They will return to Tehran as soon as the situation allows,” the ministry added.

Despite the temporary closure, Switzerland emphasized it will maintain its intermediary role between Washington and Tehran. “As part of its good offices, Switzerland will continue to maintain an open line of communication between the United States and Iran, in consultation with the two countries.”

The embassy continues to provide consular services for US citizens in or traveling to Iran, and both Washington and Tehran were informed of the closure and staff departure.
